Taking The First Step To Happiness

Happy Beings "Love Letter" Blog

What to be happy? Step one to living with happiness is the acknowledgement that there is another way. If you are not happy, then the first step to realizing true happiness, is to acknowledge that the means you repeatedly engage in to attain it, is not working. Acknowledge just that, and you are on your way. You have moved one step – an expansive step, at that. Congratulations!

What to do next? The simple answer: nothing. Do nothing other than remain on that step. It’s a big step. You won’t loose your balance. Just stay there a while and keep making acknowledgments. Look around you and note the people and things that pop up in your daily life, and then make a self-inquiry. Ask yourself: have I added this thing or person to my life as a means to bring me some measure of happiness? Look and look and look some more.

Start to get some sense of how many people, ideas, and things you call forth as a means to make happiness manifest in your life. How much of your mental attention is dedicated to the pursuit of happiness? How many moments are dedicated to dwelling on different ways to experience happiness?

Keep a list. Make mental notes. If you like, form a running tab and become acutely aware of how often either your pursuit or sense of achieved happiness is predicated on someone or something.

Stay there for a while. When you tire of the exercise, sit on the step. But, don’t move off it. You may be mentally driven by a thought-process that directs you to move. You may be guided by rationale that says that this exercise is futile and stupid and purposeless. But most assuredly, if one does step away, it is because at the root of the exercise is information that he or she does not want to spend much time with. So by staying with this first step, one is choosing to experience acknowledgment over denial. It is a choice to stay either on the pathway of real happiness or walk away; a choice of becoming one with “the real McCoy,” or continuing the seemingly unending and tiring search. It’s a call we must make on an individual basis. What’s your call?

"Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and Wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue." - Buddha

Love and peace to you, Don
